tuesday tip: HOW TO MAKE STOVETOP POPCORN

Easy stovetop popcorn recipe…now you can abandon that microwaved stuff and make fresh popcorn without the smelling like you burnt the housedown:)

I grew up eating (scarfing down) microwave popcorn. And I loved every popped kernal of it.

In fact, I really didn’t even know there was anytthing BUT the kind that came in the wrapper. I thought that popcorn was made in the package that goes in the microwave ha!

It was a sleepover delicacy, a late night movie tradition, a nastalgic smell on halloween, a special babysitting treat for the kids etc.

You named it and I’m sure I had microwave popcorn there.

I remember liking it! Whatever that fake butter dust stuff was the would be on the side of the bag…it always tasted delicious. However, as I learned more about the food I ate and what I put in my body affected (could) affect my well-being, I put a halt to microwave popcorn.

I mean, lets also not forget the fact that I haven’t lived in a home/apt equipped with a microwave for over 5 years ha. That also plays a role.

So due to those two facts, I kind of just abandoned popcorn…since it could be popped NO OTHER WAY of course.

Well, it wasn’t until a few years ago until my brother in law gifted my husband for his favorite things….this popcorn flavoring called FLAVACOL It’s not the best for you but it sure tastes good and makes your lips itch. haha

INGREDIENTS

  • popcorn kernals
  • LARGE pot with lid (ideally a lid with a little steam hole like this one…if not that’s fine and you can just release the steam)
  • oil
    • olive oil or avocado oil or canola oil or coconut oil will all work!
  • a child to help you eat it

STEPS and TIPS:

STEP #1: RIGHT TEMP

Add oil to your large pot and add a few kernals. Cover the pot.

Turn the heat to a nice medium. Wait patiently until the 3 or 4 kernals pop. Once they pop you know it is the right temp!

STEP #2: COUNT TO 30

Once ONE kernal pops, REMOVE the pot from the burner and add the remaining kernals.

Count to 30 before putting it back on the heat.

This allows all of the other kernals to reach the same temp as the oil so they can all pop in unison!

STEP #4:

Once you have counted to 30, place the pot back on the burner with the lid on.

Turn the heat down just a smidge so it doesn’t burn the kernals.

Shake shake shake over the stove while they pop. DON”T leave the pot still or the popcorn will pop unevenly and burn.

Periodically release the heat so the popcorn doesn’t get soggy but stays poppy:)

TIPS:

  • Make sure your kernals are fresh. NOT fresh kernals will yeild a chewy and tough popcorn. No bueno
  • Don’t overcrowd your pot. If you do- they won’t pop evenly and some will burn!
  • Enjoy with people who love popcorn as much as you!
